How would you feel about selling up, giving away and throwing out all of your worldly possessions?
Downsize from a large 3 bedroom apartment & a lifetime of stuff, to a backpack of clothes, phone and a laptop? This was that task, and what I found the most challenging was the change in mindset from trying to buy happiness, to one of being happy with less. It was going to be a journey of minimalism and it sounded tough, however it was that or kiss my early retirement goodbye before it began. So let me ask you… Does that sound exciting… or frightening? Maybe a little of both!? Because let me tell you I was terrified! The Motivation To Downsize
So that is where I was at, after having made the decision to go nomadic travelling in a campervan.
Initially there was a major downsizing project and then the shedding of the remaining stuff happened over the course of the next 2 years of travel. So the motivation towards minimalism is always emphasised whenever I’m on the move and “turtled up” with my backpack. I know in my last blog I said I would share some tips and tricks on downsizing, selling your personal possessions and how to deal with the emotional aspects, but I felt it was more important to share the change in mindset I had to make first, and am still making for that matter. The Change Of Mindset Journey
So before I could even start to shed my material possessions I had a shift in mindset about how I wanted to live and experience life.
I knew there had to be another way than what I had already done for many years. I felt like I was living “ground hog day” over and over, with fleeting moments of happiness and satisfaction. No amount of stuff, goals, work and achievements were giving me what I was searching for. Neither did countless personal development courses and trainings. Although they were obviously what I was meant to be doing at the time, to bring me to this point in my life. I felt there must be a Simple way of Living that I hadn’t experienced yet, and so I was willing to let go of all security, certainty, comfort zones and limitations to experience it. Now I’m not saying that the way I did things is the only way to experience living a full-time nomadic travel lifestyle! However you will find that by allowing your fixed beliefs and concepts of this world to drop away, you will open yourself up to more opportunities and embrace becoming more spontaneous with life. I found over the years I moved from a worldly mindset of self-interest & mis-trust to one of Contribution & Universal Trust.
I was at a time in my life when most people my age were planning for retirement!
They were working their arses off to try and save money, paying off mortgages, buying more and more stuff for a comfortable life and planning the occasional few weeks holiday. They had been sold the world view of work hard and sacrifice to get ahead and have a comfortable retirement. However I found myself going in the opposite direction for early retirement and freedom now. Working less, having less and wanting less, because it is all taken care of. I realised I control nothing! Yikes, and instead embraced the concept that everything will be as it’s meant to be. With this change in mindset I realised that if I got “myself” out of the way, life will show, and more to the point give me what I need, to be able to experience a life of peace and joy.
It took me 48 years to arrive at this amazing way of thinking and living, and it works for me and many others.
Yet we all know this is just not a click of the fingers decision, its a journey, a letting go of all the things that block us from the true Joy we can experience. For me its taken years and many learnings and this (in part) is that story. So join me on this journey to freedom, and in the next blog I share my tips and tricks on downsizing for a nomadic travel lifestyle. Until next time, Jill
